Synthchaser LinnDrum Main Filter Screw Terminal Capacitor Replacement

Description

The large screw terminal capacitor in the LinnDrum power supply is over 40 years old and does not perform as well as it did when it was new.  To make matters worse, the capacitor was originally underspecced and the 10V rated capacitor has been exposed to 12V over-voltage for 40 years.

When looking to replace this, I could not find a suitably specced replacement capacitor that would drop into the existing footprint.  This crucial filter capacitor is often overlooked when people recap their LinnDrum.  I also sometimes see leaded capacitors crudely soldered into place, potentially vulnerable to mechanical fatigue and connection failures caused by vibration-precisely the problem the screw terminal capacitor was originally selected to avoid.

So I’ve created this replacement capacitor module that screws in just like the original capacitor.  Capacitance, voltage rating and temperature rating have all been increased so the capacitor will be properly specced, with ample headroom to provide longevity.

The purpose of this adapter is not to avoid using an expensive screw terminal capacitor (the good new capacitors aren’t cheap)–it’s to a) cleanly replace an obsolete part and b) replace the part with a higher quality, sufficiently rated part selected for reliable, long-term operation.
